Art, Architecture and Bikes

Next month, riders along Back Roads and Beaches have the opportunity to take in some of the areas finest arts and architecture events while pedaling the scenic, autumn route. The weekend of October 6+7 is an especially good time to visit for arts lovers. There are several, great Oberlin events taking place this weekend. Spend the weekend riding, visiting wineries, and attending these wonderful events. Click here for information on lodging along the route. October is a great time to bike the Back Roads and Beaches route since the brilliant foliage, combined with roadside stands and active gallery open houses and exhibits make it a perfect weekend for biking and sightseeing. Combine these with a visit to two wineries Matus and Single Tree, located in the same vicinity. And don't forget to stop in at the Allen Memorial Art Museum on the Oberlin College Campus to check out all the new exhibits. The following are events taking place October 6:

In addition to the events happening in and around Oberlin on October 6th & 7th, you'll find two more arts events just a short distance away, in Elyria. On Oct. 7th at 7:30pm, the Lorain County Civic Orchestra will perform Bach's Cantata No. 140: Wachet Auf and Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf, Op. 67 at LCCC's Stocker Arts Center. For more information or to purchase tickets visit http://www.lorainccc.edu/Stocker+Arts+Center/. Also at the Stocker Arts Center, in the Beth K. Stocker Art Gallery, you'll find an interesting exhibit entitled "Contemporary Expressions: Tattoo Art and Graffiti". You'll learn about the Egyptian origins of tattooing and pre-historic cave painting as the earliest example of graffiti. The exhibit is free and will be open 30 minutes before the concert and 30 minutes following the concert on October 7th.

October 6th and 7th is truly a great weekend to be in Lorain County if you love arts and architecture!
Attend a performance at the world renowned Oberlin Conservatory of Music. On October 6th, the Contemporary Music Ensemble will perform in Warner Hall at 8pm. Admission is free. If you can’t attend an evening performance at the Conservatory, enjoy an afternoon concert on October 7th featuring Soprano Hannah Waldman as she sings the repertoire of the baroque to the modern, along with Sungha Lee’s performance on the piano. The Alumni Outreach Recital benefiting the Lorain County Boys and Girls Club begins at 3pm.

While in Oberlin, cycle over to the Weltzheimer/Johnson House on October 7th for a “Conversational Tour” of the Frank Lloyd Wright Usonian House; its one of the few in the nation open to the public. Perfect timing because the house is only open on the first and third Sunday of each month! The hours are 12pm-5pm. For more information, visit http://www.oberlin.edu/amam/flwright.html.
