So, yes, the weather outside (at the moment) is a bit frightful. But for active folks who would rather be out logging in miles on the road, this is a great time to check off some items from holiday shopping lists. If you're like me, not crazy about the mall...you can spend some time shopping locally and staying true to a love of cycling and all things active. I mean... shopping can be a marathon of sorts right? Here are a few places around the Back Roads and Beaches route to shop for active and truly unique gifts and have a great afternoon doing it. I've tried to outline a few local shopping itineraries that include some other stops that make shopping fun and create a fun, festive afternoon or evening.

Near Avon Lake:

Las Cazuelas--Yum!

Marty's Cycle Center, located at 453 Avon Belden Rd. in Avon Lake has lots of great cycling gifts. How about a gift certificate for a precision bike fitting? Look for the lighted bike out front. And located right around the corner from Marty's you can get your Mexican food fix at Las Cazuelas Mexican Restaurant.

When you're finished there, right down the way are John Christ and Klingshirn Wineries. Pick up some local vino for gifts while you sip some of the local varieties.

Not far from here you can also check out Old Avon Village which is decorated and reminiscent of a more old fashioned holiday. Old Avon Village features various boutiques and a bakery. There are also several great gourmet eateries here. Strip Steakhouse will be having a happy hour buffet from 3–6pm daily through Dec. 17. Near Oberlin

If you're an art lover or shopping for one, you won't leave Oberlin empty-handed. There are many galleries and gallery shops that have all sorts of unique and unusual items.

Uncommon Object

Uncommon Objects, Ginko Gallery and Riverdog are just a few. You can also find unique jewelry, home furnishings, imported African items and more. Don't forget Inspired. We featured them a few months ago in the blog. Another great opportunity to check-off gifts for hard-to-buy-for people on your list. If you're interested in local history and the Underground Railroad you can learn about them at the Oberlin Heritage Center. And when you're finished with your tour, stop in at the gift shop and pick up a book or two to share. While you are in the area, check out the progress of the Oberlin Gasholder Building Restoration. The Gasholder Building is the future home of the Oberlin Underground Railroad Center and park and ride facility. It will be a wonderful service to visiting cyclists.

If you're looking for active gifts or gear, try Swerve Bike Shop or Molnar Outdoor. Both locally owned shops have friendly staff willing to answer all your questions.

When you're ready for a break and something to nibble on, I'd recommend the Oberlin Inn for a fancy, festive sit down meal, The Feve for a burger (beef or vegan) and a beer or Quick and Delicious for some down-home comfort food.

Red Flannel 2011

It's that time of year again...time to start planning for the annual Red Flannel ride! This year will mark the 36th time the Lorain Wheelmen welcome hundreds of cyclists from all over. Some consider this their end-of-the-season swan-song. For others, it's just a chance to get out all their cold weather gear. Although many times the weather is so good, you may not need to bundle up!

The Red Flannel will take place Sunday, November 6, 2011. The ride departs from the Oberlin Community Service Center in Oberlin at 9am. The Center will also be the finishing area for the ride. Riders can complete their choice of the 33 mile or 67 mile routes. Advance registration is $15 and will be accepted until October 29. After that, the cost will be $20. This fee includes map and three snack stops.

Arts, wine and events make great fall cycling itinerary in north central Ohio

We're back to our typical, beautiful October weather! The leaves are changing, the sun is shining (and promises to do so at LEAST through the weekend) and there are lots of great events for cyclists to take in. I would suggest grabbing some reservations for this weekend and plan a great cycling, arts, wine and cuisine-filled adventure around the Back Roads and Beaches Route. First off....lodging reservations.. Here are some great suggestions:

Riverdog Retreat. I took my first extensive visit to this property the other day with artists/owners T.P. Speer and Deborah Banyas. This property is spectacular! You might not want to leave the pristine, beautiful property to ride your bike! Terry and Deborah tell me they still have openings for this weekend if you act quickly. Riverdog is a hard property to describe. It has a high-end, artistic feel while still maintaining an ease and comfort that can only be found in nature. T.P. and Deborah have skillfully blended their artwork into the renovated buildings throughout the property. The entire property, wooded trails, art gallery and lodging facilities located throughout hold many, many whimsical, cheerful surprises around every corner. Their dogs are an absolute delight. Riverdog is located on Gore Orphanage Rd., right between Vermilion Valley Vineyards and Matus Winery on the west side of Lorain County. From here you can jump right onto the BRaB route. Other great options on and around the route include the Hallauer House Bed and Breakfast and The Oberlin Inn. The Oberlin Inn is right in the center of Oberlin. You can enjoy a fabulous meal there, or walk to many fine restaurants and shops steps from the hotel. The Hallauer House is a great choice for history buffs and those cycling Underground Railroad history. The owners have painstakingly developed beautiful gardens and an interior full of Civil War era history. I visited with them the other day as well and got some images from this charming property as well:

When you're not enjoying your lodging facilities, check out the many things there are to do this weekend at our wineries, art galleries, museums, shops and restaurants:

Right now at the FAVA Gallery in Oberlin: Untangling Threads: Women Artisands in Morocco's Rug Weaving Industry. This exhibit offers the viewer a glimpse into rural Moroccan life as it documents the life, culture and craft of female weavers. It specifically focuses on artisans from rural weaving communities in the Middle and High Atlas mountains. Anna Beeke and Alia Kate collaborated on this current exhibit.

Untangling Threads at the FAVA Gallery, Oberlin

After you're finished at the exhibit, stop in at FAVA's gallery shop, Uncommon Objects, which is located just across the hall. This is the perfect place to find treasures for hard-to-please gift recipients. The shop has an assortment of paintings, prints, jewelry, pottery, glass, clothing etc. All from local artists. Walking through town, you'll find many more of these quaint, artistic shops as well. Ginko Gallery, Inspired, Ade's Place and Bead Paradise are just a few.

The Allen Art Museum in Oberlin is now open and better than ever, following a year and half renovation effort. The Allen (and all the other mentioned businesses) are very friendly and welcoming to cyclists!

Wine

Don't forget about our wineries located on the route! Several have live entertainment and events this weekend. Starting south and moving north, on the west loop of the route:

Friday: Relax and enjoy Rotuno's BBQ dinner at 5:30 followed by entertainment with Scott Stiert at 8pm.

Saturday: Entertainment by The Killer Kings beginning at 8pm

Vermilion Valley Vineyards:

Friday: Enjoy wine and food with entertainment by Dann and Lilly

Saturday: Enjoy wine and food with entertainment by Ally & Co- folk, rock and country music.

Paper Moon Vineyards:

Saturday: Paper Moon Octoberfest! German food and entertainment. Bratwurst, smoked sausage with sauerkraut, cabbage and noodles, German potato salad, red beets and strudel. Dinner from 5–8pm and live music by Bob Lawitske. Check the link for more details.

Multi-Sport

Kayaking from Lakeview Beach in Lorain, OH

The temps are supposed to be in the 80s with sunny weather around BRaB. Still time to kayak the Vermilion-Lorain water trail. If you don't want to bring your own kayak you can rent at either West River Kayak (Vermilion River) or Great Lakes Kayaking on the Black River.

If you also enjoy mountain biking, the Thorn Trail at Findley State Park is now in great shape! The rains have passed, the trail has dried so come on out and ride! The North Coast Mountain Bikers even blow the leaves off the trail to help you find your way!

Pedal into Fall

We're pedaling into fall, not just out of summer. There are plenty of activities & outdoor fun to be enjoyed on the BRaB in any season! Autumn happens to be one of the most beautiful on the route.

Let’s ride into the weekend BRaB style! This weekend we'll visit some old favorites, see some new sites and make some new friends in and around the Oberlin area.

Matus Winery

Our glasses are always half full at Matus Winery and Vermilion Valley Vineyards. Both wineries, situated on different legs of Gore Orphanage Road, have fantastic wine offerings with their own unique services.

Matus has live entertainment beginning at 8pm Friday and Saturday nights and Janice's Cafe Stuffed Pork Chops served for dinner at 5:30pm on Friday, Sept. 30. A different restaurant's entree featured each Friday.

Vermilion Valley Vineyards

Vermilion Valley also has live entertainment this Friday and Saturday beginning at 7pm. Their dinner menu is offered from 5-10pm. I recommend their homemade hummus served with the Trio Spread!

Riverdog Retreat

A must visit along the BRaB is Riverdog Retreat. It is truly that – a retreat. Discover its artful landscaping this Saturday and Sunday at their Open House. Explore the Retreat at your leisure and enjoy a complementary wine tasting featuring wines from the Vermilion Valley and elsewhere presented by Peter Badal, wine consultant at Heinen's. The property is also the home of Riverdog Studio/Gallery and is owned by artists Deborah Banyas and T.P. Speer who are also your hosts for Riverdog Retreat.

The leaves may be turning amber, but you can stay green on the Oberlin Green Energy Ohio Guided Tour. The tour begins this Saturday at 10am and showcases innovative uses of solar, energy efficiency, and other green energy technologies.

Weltzheimer/Johnson House

Don’t miss the Frank Lloyd Tours on Sunday at the The Weltzheimer/Johnson House on Morgan Street, the First Usonian Home in Ohio. Hours are 12pm until 5pm. Guided tours begin on the hour until 4pm.

Tough Mudder coming to South Amherst Quarries

Tough Mudder, an event that “tests toughness, fitness, strength, stamina, and mental grit all in one place and all in one day” will be coming here to north central Ohio on the weekend of April 14 and 15, 2012. The venue will be the South Amherst Quarries which is just off the Back Roads and Beaches route.

The 12-mile course will feature 27 obstacles all throughout. Tough Mudder is generally considered to be a stiff challenge for even the most fit athlete. And if you are familiar with north central Ohio in April, you know the weather could be 80 degrees and sunny OR we might have a half a foot of snow on the ground! All the better to add to the challenge, according to Tough Mudder officials.

The Quarries
The South Amherst Quarries is a privately held piece of spectacular and unique property of over 1000 acres. It has a history that runs deep in Lorain County and the fact that it will be open to participants and spectators during the April 14 and 15 weekend will be a rare treat for north central Ohioans who haven't experienced it firsthand. Amherst, Ohio is known as the “Sandstone Center of the World” due in part to this particular piece of land. This great new Fair Trade, Eco friendly store offers a variety of unique and useful items and gifts. You'll find fashion for the whole family as well as toys, purses, bags and jewelry. Inspired has coffee, tea, cocoa, chocolates and other goodies. Inspired is located at 57 South Main St. in Oberlin. Their hours are Mon–Sat 10am–7pm and Sun noon–5pm. Back Roads and Beaches 5K Run, Wine and Dine August 20

The Run!
The Back Roads and Beaches 5k Run, Wine and Dine is all set for Saturday, August 20 at 5pm. The race will begin and end at the Oberlin Inn which is located on the corner of Main and College Sts. right in the center of Oberlin. The course will run through the streets of Oberlin on much of the BRaB spur route.

The Party
Following the race participants, friends and the general public can enjoy live music by Kent-based band, The Speedbumps; great wine from Klingshirn Winery, Vermilion Valley Vineyards, Matus Winery and Paper Moon Vineyards. Delicious outdoor barbecue of local foods including burgers, veggie burgers, beef rib, avocado sandwiches, veggie shooters, roasted corn on the cob, desserts and more. Check out The Speedbumps here:

This is the weekend for the Fourth Annual Vermilion Harbour Triathlon, taking place Saturday, August 13th and Sunday, August 14th. The Tri/Du is part of HFP Racing's Wheelie Fun series. For those familiar with the annual triathlon, please note that the bike course is slightly altered a bit this year due to construction on West River Rd. in Vermilion. For those of you who haven't

The main triathlon/duathlon will again take place on Sunday. Registration and packet pickup will take place Saturday in Linwood Park from 12 noon – 5pm. There will be no race-day registration.

Planning to stay the weekend? Make it a multi-sport weekend. Rent a kayak and paddle the Vermilion–Lorain Water Trail, mountain bike the Thorn Trail at Findley State Park or bike the Back Roads and Beaches Bike Route through Vermilion, Oberlin, Wellington and Lorain. Because of late-summer's drier weather, this is always the best time of the year for the Thorn Mountain Bike Trail at Findley State Park in Wellington, Ohio. The trail is in the best shape all year, trees have been cleared and events are heating up. Tuesday night, August 2, the North Coast Mountain Bikers weekly time trials continue. Trials start at the beach parking lot. Start anytime between 5:30–7pm. Cost is a donation of $6. Proceeds go to the NCMTB club to maintain the Thorn Trail. The trials have seen great success this year so join in the fun with lots of fellow competitors.

2010 NEO Power Series Findley Race

The Thorn MTB trail will also serve as the venue for stage three of the NEO Power Series held by 331 Promotions this Sunday, August 7, 2011. Registration/sign in from 9:45–11:15am. Race start is at 11:30. This is a single track time trial. Online registration closes on Thurs. After that, registration will be on-site. Check out photos from last year's race here.

NCN Findley Lake Triathlon this Saturday

This Saturday, August 6 at Findley State Park, NCN Racing will host the 6th Annual Findley Lake Triathlon/ Duathlon beginning at 8am. Pre-register here or register on site. The Tri features a swim in Findley Lake, bike around the rural roads of southern Lorain County and a run through Findley's forested trails. Check out photos from last year's tri here.

If you are competing at Findley this week, you can stay right on site at the Findley campgrounds (but reserve early because Findley is very popular!) or check out the Oberlin Inn nearby. There are several bed and breakfasts in the Wellington and Oberlin area as well. Check those out here. Thorn Mountain Bike Trail, Findley State Park-Conditions and events

The Thorn Trail at Findley State Park is in great shape. The weather is hot and dry—always good for the wooded Thorn.

Starting this Tuesday, July 19, Thorn Mountain Bike Time Trials. Head to the beach parking lot and start anytime between 5:30–7pm. Seven event series. Cost is a donation of $6 which goes to the North Coast Mountain Bikers club to maintain the trail.

Fairview Meadow Farms lies quietly on the south side of the Back Roads and Beaches Bike/Multi Sport Route in Wellington. Home to truly free-range livestock Fairview Meadow Farms—owned and operated by the Joppeck family—prides themselves on raising high quality grass-fed meats and other naturally produced products. Named for their location just beyond the Lorain County Fairgrounds, Fairview Meadow’s 60-acre farm holds deep family roots as its traditions have been passed from one generation to the next. Fairview Meadow Farm is the perfect starting place for organic and healthy eating.

Fairview Meadow’s farm has been within the family for three generations, however their organic lifestyle is relatively new. Sunday was the perfect morning for a triathlon/duathlon on Lake Erie. Although it was hot, it was in the 70s and the Lake was calm for the 25th annual Lakeview Tri/Du Sprint. Well over 200 people participated.

Multisport Competition is Gearing Up

Summer is in full swing and with it, a calendar of north central Ohio multisport events. Many with the scenic backdrop of Lake Erie. Kick-start your summer with some friendly competition. Read on for event details.

Triathlon Information

NCN Racing is continuing the Rat Race Series starting this weekend. The Rat Race Series started in March and continues thru November. It features running, cycling, and swimming events in eleven races. June 19, NCN Racing will be hosting the 8^th Annual Park 2 Park Half Marathon and 5K, it will be held at the French Creek Reservation in Sheffield. For event registration and information click here. On July 10th the 25th Annual Summer Sprint Triathlon and Duathlon will be held at Lakeview Park in Lorain. The Triathlon will include a 1/4 mile swim in Lake Erie followed by a 14.3 mile bike and 5K run. For event registration click here. Following in August will be the 6th Annual Findley Lake Triathlon and Duathlon. Starting at 8am on August 6th, the course will feature a 1/4 mile swim in Findley Lake, a 16 mile bike course, and a 5K run through Findley State Park. Click here for Findley Lake Tri registration. HFP Racing is bringing their Wheelie Fun Triathlon and Duathlon Series to the beautiful harbor town of Vermilion. The Vermilion Harbour Triathlon will be held on Sunday August 14th at 7am. The course features a near shore Lake Erie swim, hilly bike ride along the Back Roads and Beaches route and run through the charming downtown Vermilion area. 331 Racing is adding adrenaline to the mix of events with the NEO Power Series starting this June. This cross country cycling race series is a test of true dedication and passion. Composed of six stages and featuring many different levels of competition, 331 Racing is looking for all ages to participate. On August 7^th, stage three moves to the north central Ohio area for the Thorn Time Trail. Taking place at Findley State Park just South of Wellington, the course is a nine mile loop traveling through mature wooded areas and past Findley Lake. Don’t forget, the Back Roads and Beaches 5K Wine and Dine registration is now open. The run is set for Saturday, August 20, 2011, 5pm start. Registration will be open at 3:30pm. Lake Erie kayaking off Lorain

Kayakers searching for fresh water and a scenic view will find Lake Erie a perfect stop on their path to fun this summer. The season for kayaking has begun here in north central Ohio. Nestled in the north central shoreline of Ohio, Lorain County is home to some of the most scenic areas surrounding Lake Erie. Starting in Vermilion and heading across the Erie Coast in Lorain to the Elyria Black River Reservation, the waterways provide a great outdoor adventure. With summer almost here, check out the following information to get your paddle going!

The Vermilion-Lorain Water Trail starts in the quaint historic downtown of Vermilion. But you can put-in at any of the public access points along the way. The trail is 27 miles long and offers both river and open water travel along the Lake Erie shore. The trail starts beside the shale cliffs of the Vermilion River at the Vermilion River Reservation in Brownhelm Township. It continues its path along the river and exits into Lake Erie in Vermilion. You can then follow the Erie shore line east to the mouth of the Black River, close to downtown Lorain, to conclude your journey. Along with a lively waterway, the trail also includes hiking and biking opportunities within the Lorain County Metro Parks. You can also make a stop at historical and cultural landmarks the course offers including the Lakeview Rose Garden, Black River Historical Society, and the Lorain Lighthouse.

Kayak Rental

Grumpy’s Riverside located on 14^th and Broadway in Lorain is getting their kayaks ready with pricing starting at $15 an hour for a single and $25 an hour for a double. Grumpy’s will provide shuttling upon a call in advance request. They will shuttle personal and rental kayaks, prices vary based on need. Grumpy’s Riverside is open Monday thru Sunday 8am to 6pm. West River Kayak and Canoe is a new addition to our list of kayaking headquarters. Located at Captain's Corner Marina on the corner of Liberty Avenue and West River Road in Vermilion, West
River provides rentals of kayaks, canoes, and bikes. Kayak prices start at $12 an hour and $35 for all day use. Their location at 655 West River Road is open for operation Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 10am to 6pm.

Findley State Park

Another great scenic trip which serves as an alternative to Lake Erie is Findley State Park in Wellington. Offering a 93-acre lake and 2-man kayak, canoes, and rowboat rentals, Findley makes a great addition to your summer to-do list. Downtown Oberlin now plays host to a shiny, new bike shop called “Swerve.” Cyclists who are visiting Oberlin in droves can now buy gear, supplies and get repairs at the locally owned and operated shop. Owners Chris Robinson and Jason Adelman can also point cyclists to great local places to ride, on and off-road. Jason is also the owner of “The Feve” restaurant right across the street, a popular local bicycle-friendly pub with great food.

The weather here in north central Ohio has been unseasonably warm and sunny. The sun is shining in my window as I type this and the temp outside is 55 degrees. This means all around the Back Roads and Beaches route, you'll see enthusiastic cyclists and runners out getting ready for another great season! And local businesses are gearing up for them.

The city of Oberlin has its own dedicated Back Roads and Beaches spur route that leads riders from the main route easily into the downtown business district and back. This winter, several new businesses have cropped up that will excite and entertain cyclists wanting to spend some time getting some great food and/or bike gear.

We hope to report on a new bike shop, cheese shop and pizza restaurant very soon, as they open. Currently, there are two new restaurants open within the city of Oberlin. Both feature healthy, fresh menu items.

Café Sprouts recently opened on East College Street, within the newly established East College Street project. The eatery features a wide variety of fresh, natural foods including organics, vegan and vegetarian offerings. Their juices, smoothies and mylkshakes appear to be especially popular. Their shelves were stocked with delicious desserts, wraps, veggies, spreads, teas and soups. The offerings here are very diverse, it would seem anyone could find something tasty and filling! You might also think about stopping here before going out onto Back Roads and Beaches and picking up a wrap to go. I can easily envision their sunny little corner filled with cyclists!

Right smack in the center of town, on the corner of College and Main Sts., is a shiny, brand-new Aladdin's Eatery. If you aren't familiar with Aladdin's, here is your chance to give them a try! Aladdin's mission is “to provide our customers with unique, natural foods and at the same time, cater to their increased awareness and concern regarding health and nutrition.” The huge menu features many, many Lebanese/American food, vegetarian options, soups, pita pitzas, salad pockets, juices and much more. Adventure Weekend—Mountain Bike Ice Racing and More

No such thing as “post-holiday blues” this weekend. Embrace the winter and embark on an adventure weekend!

A truly original winter blast!
The North Coast Mountain Bikers have developed a cross country, mountain bike, ice course on Findley Lake at Findley State Park in Wellington, OH. (check out map below for directions) Racing will be Saturday evening, beginning at 6:30pm. Course will be lit by lantern—very magical and cool! According to the NCMTB club, these are the only ice races in Ohio. Details: Two classes-studded and non studded tires. (Nab says studded is much more fun, btw). There will be a bonfire and hot chocolate. $10 donation. This is a laid-back fun event with lots of friendly folks so come on out and join them.

Make it a winter weekend getaway by including snow shoeing and/or cross country skiing to the mix. Findley State Park is a great place to enjoy either. You can also combine a visit to some of our local wineries and great local restaurants. Several great lodging options are within a 20 minute drive of Findley State Park. The Oberlin Inn is currently offering a winter escape package which includes one night accommodations and breakfast for 2 for $110 (inclusive of all taxes and gratuity). The Hallauer House Bed and Breakfast is also just up the road a bit and offers a warm welcome to cyclists. A little further north, in the charming town of Amherst is 5 Corners Bed and Breakfast. Here you can book one of several packages that can include massage and/or a wine getaway. 5 Corners is also offering a special package for this Friday and Saturday nights only: $89 plus a complimentary bottle of champagne or sparkling juice. (sounds like a great way to top off an exciting evening of ice racing!) Just mention the keyword “bike” when booking.

Red Flannel Bike Ride set for Sunday, November 7, 2010

The 35th annual Red Flannel Metric Century (67 mi) and half-metric (33 mi) will depart this Sunday from the Oberlin Community Service Center (map) at 9am. The ride is presented by the Lorain Wheelmen. For many, this ride is the traditional end-of-season ride before cleaning up and storing the bike for the winter. For others, it's only the beginning of the fall/winter riding season.

The ride usually brings out hundreds of riders of all levels to ride the scenic course and enjoy the great homemade foods. Cost is $20 and can be paid at the start of the ride. The first 350 riders get a commemorative bottle. You'll find hearty food along the way like black bean soup and chili. Sag wagon and repair service will be available for the ride. Click here for a list of local accommodations. Make a weekend out of it and attend a local performance or art gallery. There will be plenty going on. Meet Mountain Bike Racer Lindsey Prososki

Meet Lindsey Prososki, Back Roads and Beaches’ sponsored mountain biking phenom. Now a 16 year old junior at North Ridgeville High School, Lindsey has been racing for 11 years, starting in the competitive sport of mountain biking at the ripe age of 5. By the age of 12, she was a full time mountain biker taking over racing circuits across the country. She is currently ranked number 1 in the country by USA Cycling for junior women cross country and has taken many impressive first place finishes in races including the prestigious Kenda Cup Series.

According to Lindsey, her dad was instrumental in her early start as a mountain biker. She grew up watching her father race mountain bikes competitively, but according to Lindsey’s mom “Now he can’t keep up”. With Lindsey’s talent, it’s understandable. In addition to her first place ranking in the country, Lindsey was also previously named the novice women’s state champion in the Ohio Mountain Bike Championship (OMBC) series. This class is designed for women aged 25 and up, and at the time of her win, Lindsey was merely 13 years old. This major feat sums up the drive and talent that Lindsey possesses. She also won the Iceman Cometh Challenge which is believed to be the largest single day mountain bike race in the world which boasts more than 5,000 racers.

Taking part in races as Lindsey does, is by no means an easy feat. Racing mountain bikes on tracks that are usually 15 or more miles long, full of treacherous terrain with many steep downhills, and doing so in sometimes inclement weather would be enough to stop many people from even trying the sport. Bravery is definitely not something Lindsey is lacking. Four concussions and a broken elbow later, Lindsey is still unfazed by the possible dangers.

As you can see, completing such a race is difficult enough in itself. However; it’s not as if she simply jumps on her bike before the start of the race. Racing requires many long hours of practice, and according to Lindsey, “that’s the hardest part.” In order to prepare for such rigorous races, Lindsey bikes countless miles daily at the Lorain County Metroparks. For a 16 year old, this level of dedication is unheard of to many. And in her mind, her young age is not a hindrance, but rather a perk. “It’s fun being younger than the other racers. Everyone treats me like I’m their kid.”

However; being a teenager means having a busy schedule. When asked how she juggles mountain biking with other extracurricular activities, school, and friends, Lindsey says “I stopped playing basketball and volleyball to concentrate on racing. It’s hard, but I try to ride every day.” It’s clear that her commitment to the sport is unwavering. In the future, Lindsey wants to attend college to become an attorney. Her biggest hope is to attend a college with a mountain biking team so she can continue to compete in her beloved sport. As for now, her goal is to race in the Expert Category by the time she is 18, and after all of the things she has accomplished, it wouldn’t be much of a stretch. Keep your eyes out and expect even bigger things from Lindsey in the future! We wish her the best of luck!

Despite the threat of rain in today's forecast, it turned out to be a beautiful day in Vermilion for the annual HFP Vermilion Harbor Triathlon. Results from the triathlon will be posted here.

Congratulations to first place olympic relay team, Back Roads and Beaches. Team members include swimmer, Jim Janasko of Amherst; cyclist, Todd Westley of Elyria, and runner Joanna Johnson who is part of the Oberlin College Cross Country team. Much of the cycling course utilizes the Back Roads and Beaches route. Congratulations to all the athletes that came out to enjoy the great weather, challenging course and formidable competition. The Back Roads and Beaches olympic relay team is ready for this weekend’s Vermilion Harbor Triathlon and Duathlon. BRaB consists of Jim Janasko (swim), Todd Westley (bike) and Joanna Johnson (run). Jim Galloway will also be competing in the olympic distance for Back Roads and Beaches.

The Vermilion Harbor Triathlon is part HFP Racing’s Wheelie Fun Triathlon and Duathlon series. It takes place, Sunday, August 15 beginning at 8am. Saturday, August 14 will be "Girls Tri Too." An all-women’s tri consisting of a 250-yard swim, followed by a 7-mile bike and a 2-mile run. Click here to sign up for “Girls Tri Too.”

If you’re planning to stay overnight, check out the Visit Lorain County website for some great lodging options. Over 100 racers visited Findley State Park Sunday for the first NEO Power Series MTB Race sponsored by 331 Racing. This was stage one of a five stage series. Posted results report overall winner was Jeff Pendlebury with a time of 39:34:45, second overall Steve Twining with a time of 39:50:48, third overall Chip Meek with a time of 40:36:90. First overall female was Nancy Desmond with a time of 48:42:62, second was Emily Benson with a time of 52:06:64. These are preliminary results. 2010 NCN Lorain Lakeview Sprint Triathlon/Duathlon recap

Almost 200 participants enjoyed near perfect weather for yesterday’s Lorain Lakeview Sprint Triathlon/ Duathlon hosted by NCN Racing. Posted results indicated the overall winner for the sprint triathlon was Jeff Wilson whose overall time was 1:01:31. Second place overall was Brooks Butler with an overall time of 1:02:23. First place, women’s division was Joanne Collins with an overall time of 1:12:20. Second place women's overall went to Angela Ridgel with a time of 1:15:05. First place duathlon men’s division went to Michael Larimer, second to Mark Wladecki. First place duathlon women’s went to Julie Visconsi, second place to Anja Jankowsky. Back Roads and Beaches is currently forming triathlon teams to promote the route again this year. This is a great chance to participate with and meet other athletes, compete in your sport and get a free t-shirt!

We are currently working to assemble teams of like-abilities so no need to worry about being incompatible with teammates. We've had teams that are in it to win as well as those that are just there to have fun and compete. There is no cost to team members, we just ask that you wear the logo (we will provide tshirts/ temporary tattoos) show up and have fun! After acquiring his dream sports car— Bryce Rapp took a look at his life and decided he was finished living life accumulating possessions and wealth. He and his wife decided to give away their money, literally throw open the doors of his self-described suburban “McMansion” and freely distribute their belongings to anyone in need. No questions asked. He compared his complicated and extravagant life of five years ago to the simple life he lives now, “you wouldn’t believe the difference,” he remarked.

Charting his family’s course, Bryce depended solely on his faith and will to serve other people in need. Inspired by an initial donation of a handful of bikes to a homeless shelter, Bryce quickly realized he would now spend his time serving others through bikes. The family of seven moved from their pricey mansion into a rented farmhouse just outside Oberlin on SR 511. I found Bryce after being curious about a hand-made sign in front of the house that reads “Free bike tuneUps while U wait.” I wondered why someone would want tune up stranger’s bikes for free. Turns out, Bryce wants any needy person (whether needy because of a lack of financial resources or by unfortunate mechanical breakdown while in the area) to have a means to get them back up on two wheels.

After calling Bryce to get the story I made arrangements to come out and see his operation. His story is actually very simple. He doesn’t ask for anything. He just wants anyone who cannot afford a bike to have one. So he collects bikes and pieces of bikes that are either donated or thrown into the trash, fixes them up and gives them away. He trusts that people will not use him as a way to circumvent the costs of a bike shop. In fact, he stresses that his purpose is not to be a bike shop or take business from shop owners.

Bryce’s bike operation can be found just off the Back Roads and Beaches route about a half-mile west of Pyle Rd on SR 511. He is very friendly and welcoming to those who are curious about his mission and his infectious enthusiasm is quite inspiring. He and his wife are also triathletes and enjoy cycling. Traveling cyclists can stop by, borrow some tools or fill a water bottle. I’m sure, as I did, you’ll leave with a smile on your face.

Freedom’s Friends History Walk

Oberlin is perhaps the most important station along the whole line of the Underground Railway. It has rendered the most important services to Freedom. It is second only to Canada as an asylum for the hunted fugitive. Hear stories about Oberlin's most famous freedom seekers and people known to have helped them make their way to freedom. This tour is most likely to be enjoyed by adults and children 9 years of age and up.

Advance registration is not required for this tour, although it is appreciated. Tickets are available online and at the Museum Store in the Monroe House up until tour time. Tickets will not be available at the tour start location. This history walk will be canceled if it is raining at start time and registrants may request refunds or transfers.

This tour begins near the front steps of First Church, U.C.C. at the northwest corner of Main Street (SR 58) and Lorain Street (SR 511). 440.774.1700

Ice is beginning to form on Findley Lake. That and a cold forecast are enough for Nab and the North Coast Mountain Bikers to schedule the first ice race for January 10. The race will begin around noon. Come earlier for practice. Races will take place on a figure 8 and a Cross Country course. Classes include studded and non studded tires. The Thorn Mountain Bike Trail is in great shape to ride for this weekend. And with a forecast of sunny and 60s it’s definitely time to hit the trail! North Coast MTB Club leader Nab has been out and has blown the entire trail clear of leaves and added a half mile section. Now making the trail a full 9 miles! For many, the Lorain Wheelmen’s annual Red Flannel ride marks the end of the riding season—or just the beginning of the fall/winter cycling season. Set for November 1st, the ride typically brings out hundreds of cyclists to enjoy a scenic fall ride. The start-finish and registration is in Oberlin. Distances are 67 miles and 33 miles. Upcoming weekend full of cycling, arts, farmers markets and autumn delights

Activity around the Back Roads and Beaches route this weekend will be sure to please cyclists and tourists interested in arts, locally grown foods, architecture, performance, and entertainment for just about anyone. Fall colors are appearing in all their glory to form a gorgeous backdrop for a weekend of cycling, entertainment, great food and wine. There is a lot going on so make your plans now to stay for the weekend to catch it all! Here are a list of activities moving south to north around the route and assuming you’ll be starting your tour at Findley State Park in Wellington:

Findley State Park Fall Campout: Celebrate fall and create some great family memories. The park will have a craft show, games, trick or treating, hayrides and much more. Regular camping fees apply. Call 440-647-5749 for more information. Don’t forget your mountain bike to catch the Thorn Trail at Findley. It’s 10 miles of awesome single-track!

When you pedal your way north on Back Roads and Beaches, make sure to stop at the Wellington Reservation and rent a paddle boat for free. This facility has spectacular fall color and the cleanest restrooms around!

Heading north toward Oberlin-take the new BRaB Oberlin spur route and you just might end up spending an entire day exploring here! But before you head into town, check out the Breuer Pottery Open House. The event is both Saturday and Sunday from noon–5pm. Enjoy wine, hors d'oeuvres and desserts in this rustic, artsy setting located immediately to the left of the bike path leading into Oberlin. Once you leave Breuer Potter, follow the BRaB signs until you see the new BRaB spur route signs and follow those into town. Once you turn onto Morgan St., don't miss the Weltzheimer Johnson House on the left. You can tour this Frank Lloyd Wright Usonian house from 12–5pm this Sunday, October 4)

The FAVA Gallery presents Claudia Berlinski & Sherry Bradshaw Searching for the Underground Sea, a collection of works on paper, in conjunction with Sherry Bradshaw’s Digging Beneath the Surface, an installation piece. The gallery is open this weekend, Saturday from 11am–5pm and Sunday 1–5pm.

Saturday, October 3 is also Oberlin Community Day and a great opportunity to explore the many organizations and businesses that make Oberlin such a special place. The historic Apollo Theater will be reopening after an exciting phase I renovation. The opening will be celebrated with a free showing of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince at 10am on Saturday. Other Community Day activities include:

11:45am: Don Pease Bike Path dedication with music by the Oberlin High School Band. The bike path will be dedicated in honor of Congressman Don Pease at the Oberlin Depot, where the bike path meets Main St. (SR 58)
1–3pm: Explore Oberlin Bike Tour, win prizes for visiting Oberlin lites! Register at the flagpole at the corner of Tappan Square
1:30pm: OCircus Performance, Tappan Square
2–3pm: Free ice cream on Tappan Square
3–3:15pm: Bike tour prize drawing for tourists who visit a majority of sites and organizations.
The Oberlin Heritage Center will also be offering a day of free family-friendly events such as guided tours, historic games and school house events.

Moving along through BRaB, outside of Oberlin... Matus Winery will be celebrating Octoberfest with a gourmet German meal on Saturday evening beginning at 5:30pm. Live entertainment will begin at 8pm. Or you can just stop out anything throughout the afternoon. Matus Winery loves cyclists!

Paper Moon Winery will be featuring a Jazz Quintet on Saturday from 4–7pm.

Between Oberlin and Vermilion, just off the BRaB route, you’ll find a delightful, whimsical gallery open-house at Riverdog Gallery on Gore Orphanage Road. They are hosting their open house in tandem with Breuer Potter this Saturday and Sunday afternoon.

Moving north toward Vermilion, you will notice Miller's Apple Hill is in full "pick your own apples" mode. This is a great time to pull over and experience fresh, just picked produce and cider, get a wagon ride and pick up some trail mix.

There are plenty of orchards and farmer’s markets along the route to stop and pick up some “natural energy”

Sure, with its charming rural roads and beautiful scenery, the Back Roads and Beaches Route is great all by itself. But what’s a real ride without a destination? Whether you're training hard on the big climbs or just out for a relaxing ride, everyone deserves a break. Here are just a few of the terrific attractions along the route:

Art Galleries

The Firelands Assocation for the Visual Arts (FAVA) in Oberlin has just opened a brand new double exhibit. Claudia Berlinski presents Searching for the Underground Sea (works on paper) alongside Sherry Bradshaw’s Digging Beneath the Surface (installation). The exhibit runs through Oct. 4. FAVA is open Tuesday–Saturday, 11–5, and Sundays, 1-5.

And while in Oberlin, be sure to check out Ginko Gallery, the town’s combination art studio and gallery. Visitors can observe five resident artists in the creative process, as well as browse the gallery’s finished art. Ginko Gallery is open Tuesday-Saturday, 10-6, and Saturday, 12-4.

Miller’s Apple Hill: It might be a little early for apples, but Miller’s has a great Bulk Foods Store. Family-owned and -operated, Miller’s offers a large assortment of candies, snack mixes, meats, cheeses, flours, sugars, grains, and a whole lot more.

George Jones Farm and Nature Preserve: Owned by Oberlin College, this organic farm was founded as a community sustainable argiculture project. Browse the Farmer’s Market and learn more about this unique and innovative farm.
Oberlin Market: This grocery/bakery/cafe serves Certified Organic and local, no spray foods. Stop in for a meal, or load up on fresh provisions for your ride.

On any given Saturday, Farmer’s Markets can be found in Lorain (9 am to 1 pm), Wellington (9 am to 2 pm), Oberlin (9 am to 1 pm), and Vermilion (2 pm to 6 pm). Tons of fresh, local produce and other organic products.

There are many other sights and attractions along the route, including Lake Erie’s beaches, the Lorain County Metro Parks, multiple wineries, and exciting multi-sport adventures. 2009 Vermilion Harbour Triathlon recap

It was a hot but otherwise beautiful day for the 2nd Vermilion Harbour Triathlon today. About 500 people showed up to compete in Sprint Triathlon, Olympic Triathlon, Duathlon and Aquabike. Overall winner for the Olympic Tri was Ross Hartley with a time of 2:02:25. Overall female was Andrea Myers with a time of 2:23:57. Complete results can be found at the HFP Website here. Adam Kuncel, wearing the Back Roads and Beaches logo, came in 12th overall with the impressive time of 2:19:30. Congratulations to all the athletes who participated in today’s race, including the 1st place Olympic distance team Back Roads and Beaches that consisted of Eileen Bringman (swim time 24:10), Don Haradem (bike time 1:11:25) and Graham Wellman (run time 39:40). Thanks also to Jim Galloway who represented BRaB and placed first in the 50–54 category.

Trail conditions at Findley State Park Mountain Bike Trail

Today’s report from Nab says that the Thorn Mountain Bike Trail at Findley State Park has dried out enough that there is no mud, just some soft spots. Temps are supposed to be in the 90s so a ride in the cool woods might be mighty nice!

Touring cyclists: There are many, many great events going on around the route this weekend including farmer's markets, winery events and more. Bicycle-friendly Oberlin all set for big weekend of cyclists

This coming weekend, Oberlin will be abuzz with activity including touring cyclists, groups, events and travel writers, not to mention the Oberlin Family Fun Fair will be going on at the same time. We often laud Oberlin for being such a bicycle friendly city. Here are a few scenes so you can see the spirit touring cyclists will encounter upon pedaling into this funky, eclectic college town. And don't forget, Saturday night bike-in movies on Tappan Square! This Sat. features Pee Wee's Big Adventure at dark!

Oberlin parks worker, Mike Ives installs new Back Roads and Beaches signage. The signs are designed to assist touring cyclists to get into Oberlin from the Back Roads and Beaches Route as well as from Adventure Cycling's Underground Railroad Route, passing significant Underground Railroad places of interest such as Westwood Cemetery and the Underground Railroad sculpture. The spur route will also take cyclists by the Frank Lloyd Wright Usonian House (Weltzheimer Johnson House), the Oberlin Heritage Center and into the center of town for dining, shopping, art galleries and performances. Underground Railroad cyclists should also check out this blog entry about a local farm you will pass riding into town. Important note: cyclists that ride into town on SR 58 instead of following the Back Roads and Beaches into town will miss out on much of the most significant Underground Railroad history AND the most scenic, lightly traveled roads. You won't find avid local cyclists riding SR 58.

Cyclists following the Back Roads and Beaches spur signs will pedal by the Westwood Cemetery where there are gravesites of many former slaves, abolitionists and civil rights activists. This is also the spot for the Underground Railroad Monument dedicated to all the fugitive slaves who passed through Oberlin on their journey to freedom.

Come on out for the Thorn Mountain Bike trail, North Coast Mountain Bikers weekly time trials, Tuesday, July 20, 5:30–7:30pm. According to Nab, last week Chip Meek beat his record of 38.41 and Linda Miranda had the fastest time for women at 53.05. We hear all levels of riders, men, women and families are showing up and it’s no wonder. The Thorn trail keeps getting better and bigger each year. It’s a blast! We’ll be out there as well to get some photos to post up on our Facebook page and here on the blog.

Thanks to the riders who came out on last night’s group ride. It turned out to be a fast group of both roadies and triathletes. All agreed it was a great ride and want to ride regularly. Get your heart rate going and join them again next Thursday, July 23rd at 6pm. All are welcome—no pressure to hammer with these guys above. Vermilion-Lorain Water Trail Now Open!

The much anticipated, 27-mile waterway was finally dedicated on July 1st. The Water Trail, if you hadn’t heard already, extends from Vermilion downstream to Lake Erie, along the shoreline, and up the Black River to Elyria. These waters have always been open to public access for kayaks and canoes, but an official state Water Trail designation means signage, boat ramps, increased parking, maps, points of interest, the ever-important hazard warnings, and launch docks.

For fans of adventure sports in Lorain County, this is great news. Never before have the county’s waterways been so easy to utilize. And because the different segments of the Water-Trail are so diversified (it’s the only state designated water trail to combine rivers and open water) the fun is open to all different ages and experience levels. And it’s the perfect complement for the Back Roads and Beaches Bike and Multi-Sport Route. With little planning or effort, that day-long bike trip you’ve been planning can turn into weekend-long multi-sport adventure.

At the trail’s dedication, state and local officials talked about the unique value of a designated water route in a county like Lorain. Sean Logan, Director of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, calls the Water Trail a gateway between the civilized and natural realms, a place where individuals can enjoy all the beauty and excitement that nature has to offer in a safe and fun environment. Chief Pat Dillon of the State’s Division of Watercraft, reported that Lorain’s on the cutting edge of a statewide movement—kayak and canoe use in Ohio’s lakes and rivers has increased by 34% since 2003, and kayaks and canoes represent 20% of all registered watercraft.

But all this aside, what’s the best thing about the Vermilion-Lorain Water Trail?
It’s still free. Only now, with the added help of the Metro Parks and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, enjoying the waterways and surrounding wildlife of Lorain County has never been easier.

For interested beginners, the Metro Parks are currently offering kayaking classes at Splash Zone in Oberlin.

Kayak rental is available on the Black River through Great Lakes Kayaking, and plans are pending for a similar service on the Vermilion River.

With blue skies, abundant sunshine and the Lorain International Festival along Lake Erie today, I thought it would be a great day to rent kayaks and take my ten-year old daughter kayaking on the Black River from Lorain, OH. Here are a few scenes from the (rented from Great Lakes Kayaking) kayak.

Note to cyclists who were diverted over the Henderson Bridge last year: YES this is the Berry Bridge and YES it is OPEN! Cyclists riding along SR6 portion of the Back Roads and Beaches Route.

I just can’t take enough pictures of these herons although to really take a good picture of these elusive and camera-shy birds, you have to have a really good lens, good camera and a lot of photography skills. Click here for a better example of a great blue heron on the Black River. There are so many birds on the Black River that I never see anywhere else, and they always thrill me when I see them.

Findley State Park mountain biking time trials

Every Tuesday, July 7 through August 17 mountain bikers can come out to the Thorn Trail between 5:30–7:30pm at Findley State Park for "time trails." For $5 riders can see how they stack up against some of the fastest racers in Ohio or just against their riding buddies. $5 covers two individual laps. Classes will include expert, sport, beginner and women. Records will be kept throughout the weeks. Prizes will be awarded to class winners based on best four times out of possible seven. Oberlin Bike Co-op

The Oberlin Bike Co-op is a cooperatively owned bicycle repair, rental, and education center located in Oberlin, OH. Students and community members volunteer their time and bicycle expertise to ensure that Oberlin maintains its reputation as one of the most bike-friendly communities around. The Co-op is situated in the back of the college's Keep Cottage on Main St. just across from the Oberlin Middle School.

The real value of the Co-op is the service it provides to its own community. When students leave Oberlin for the summer, a large number of bikes are inevitably left behind all over campus. Instead of throwing them out, or sending them off to be melted down and recycled, the Co-op effectively "reCycles" the bikes back into the community by renting refurbished bikes and helping others build their own with used parts.

The Co-op is staffed by knowledgable individuals ready to answer your questions or just talk shop, but the Co-op is so much more than a repair center. Those interested can join the Co-op, learn about bike maintenance, give back to the community, and build their very own bike! No experience necessary.

The Co-op is not-for-profit. Its only goals are to get as many bikes out into the community as possible, and to help educate the community about the personal rewards of biking and bike maintenence.

As a reader of the Back Roads and Beaches Bike and Multi-Sport route blog probably knows, bikes are an awesome tool for teaching self-sufficiency, sustainability, and personal empowerment to kids. Anyone at all familiar with the Co-op knows that it's really just as much about community outreach as it is about bikes. Aside from the regular repair and education services, the co-op is featuring some special events this summer:

Ride on out to Tappan Square after sundown (10 PM) for Saturday's Bike-In-Movie. Kid-friendly movies are projected on a big screen every week. Last Week: Empire Records.

Sign the kids up for the Co-op's week-long Bikes & Kids Camp. Learn about biking and bike maintenance and, of course, have a ton of fun doing it. Camp will be the last week in July (27th-31st). Be sure to call soon and let them know you're interested.

Thorn Mountain Bike Trail Conditions

The Thorn Trail didn't get as much rain as predicted so it's good to go, according to Nab. There is now a shorter loop so riders have a 6.5 mile option. It bypasses the back section and is also a great alternative when the back is muddy. Currently the back IS muddy in some spots but rideable for most.

Juneteenth Festival, June 12-13

On October 16, 1859, abolitionist John Brown and his eighteen men stormed Harpers Ferry in a heroic attempt to instigate armed slave revolt throughout the region. Brown and his men occupied the arsenal for a day and a half before the arrival of federal troops under the command of Robert E. Lee. The ensuing battle left eleven dead, including Oberlin resident Lewis Sheridan Leary. Among those captured were John A. Copeland and Shields Green, also Oberlin residents. Copeland and Green, like John Brown himself, were convicted and executed for treason two months later. While the raid may have failed to spur widespread slave revolt, the sacrifices of Brown and his men did succeed in setting a lofty and valorous example for the abolitionist movement, while also prodding the nation that much closer to confrontation over the issue of slavery.

Looking for an exciting stop along the Back Roads and Beaches route? Come to Tappan Square in Oberlin for the annual Juneteenth celebration to help commemorate the sacrifices of John Brown and the three Oberlin men who fought beside him during the historic 1859 raid on the federal arsenal at Harpers Ferry.

Learn more about Harper’s Ferry, as well as the life of Abraham Lincoln and Oberlin’s important role in the abolitionist cause through presentations and guided tours around town. Peruse the various vendors and exhibitions and enjoy music, children’s activities, contests, and historical reenactments in beautiful Tappan Square.

When you’re ready to jump back on the bike, head out of Oberlin along the Back Roads and Beaches route to view hot air balloons at the Wellington BalloonFest (June 13th) or browse Wellington’s Village Wide Sidewalk & Yard Sales (June 12th-13th). Swap the bike for some hiking boots and hit the trails in Findley State Park. Enjoy a well-earned respite at one of the multiple wineries along the route, or simply spend some time on the gorgeous beaches of Lake Erie.

Memorial Day weekend is always a great time to plan a trip around north central Ohio. There are so many great events going on, especially around the Back Roads and Beaches Route. Here are some suggested activities based on your riding style. All of the below suggestions can be found on or just around (within a mile or two) of the route. They can be found on the BRaB map)

Commencement weekend at Oberlin College

Hammer heads-“I'm just here to soak up the good weather and put in some extra training hours.”

Begin at Findley State Park, ride north and do the loop in a counter-clockwise direction. This will give you optimal hill climbing options, especially in the Dean Rd./Sperry Rd. area. Dean Rd. gets to 21%. Really want a challenge? Do some repeats. Once back at Findley State Park, you will have 60 miles in. For an added challenge, bring along your mountain bike and do a loop or two of the Thorn Mountain Bike Trail. If you’re out early Saturday morning you’re sure to see others out training on the route.

Finish your day with a giant, organic burrito from the Agave in Oberlin. This weekend you can even take in a viewing of the classic film The Graduate, in the classic Apollo Theatre. Very cool!

Day two: Combine your training ride with a great upper body workout by hopping in a kayak at the Port Authority launch off Broadway in Lorain and paddle up the Black River to the Lighthouse. Kayaks can be rented here through Great Lakes Kayaking. Turn off into the Lakeside Marina, tie off and have a bite to eat while enjoying great views of the marina and lighthouse at the Jackalope Restaurant.

This is a great weekend to add some flavor to your workout. Take the whole weekend, enjoy some great riding and multi-sport activity and experience some unique events along the way. Thorn Trail about ready to ride

With this warm sunny weather coming our way I'm hoping by Sunday our trail should finally be in riding shape. Perhaps later in the day Saturday too. It will no doubt still have some soft spots but that's not a problem for mountain bikers. I've spent the past few weeks filling in trouble areas with a stone/dirt mix and have finally cleared all the fallen trees. So I'm ready to ride this weekend. Saturday me and some of the guys are hoping to finish a 24-foot bridge. It's at the bottom of the downhill in the coaster section. My intention is instead of taking a slight left then right turn at the bottom. The bridge will able the crazies to blast straight down and carry their speed across the bridge then up the other side. Should be fun!

Join us for a Raw Vegan Potluck on Friday, April 24th, 2009 from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. at the Oberlin Public Library. It is a wonderful opportunity to gather with like-minded people to socialize and eat a raw plant-based meal. Learn about the Living Foods Lifestyle from Raw Vegan chef Che Gonzalez and guests, Leeza Ramsey, Laura Paxton, and Jim Lawhead.

Please bring a prepared dish of raw, organic (preferably), and vegan ingredients (no animal products!) soups, crackers, salads, dressings and sauces, entrees, desserts, and snacks.

Provide a detailed list of the ingredients. If it's your first time and you don't know what to bring, but are interested in coming, just bring an organic salad with dressing on the side. Please bring your own plates and silverware.

2009 Oberlin Earth Day 5k run

It's like a sign of spring. The 5k Earth Day run in Oberlin. And what a beautiful day it was. It appeared that there were about 50 runners for the race. The overall winner was Brett Barkacs with a time of 19:25. Second overall: Jim Galloway with a time of 21:03. The first female runner to cross the line was Alexa Sharp with a time of 21:54, and second place women's was Marty Stuedle with a time of 23:16. Some photos from the day:

This coming weekend-season's events begin

This weekend is kind of like the unofficial start of our outdoor events season. This Saturday, April 18th in Oberlin is the annual 5k Earth Day run. The weather forecast for this looks superb! The run will start and finish on Tappan Square at 10am. Entry fee is $10 per person and the first 75 registrants will receive a t-shirt. The Lorain Wheelmen’s annual tradition to begin the cycling season-Afrost is Sunday, April 19 and begin at 9am. For details check out the Wheelmen’s Afrost Page. Goodbye winter

It’s snowing today but we are ignoring it, opting instead to think about the great riding, kayaking and mountain biking that lie just ahead. Since Nab sent along some photos from an ice race at Findley, we thought we’d post them as a fitting farewell to winter. Thanks Nab!

Two new wineries make six on Back Roads and Beaches route

The great thing about the Back Roads and Beaches bike and multi-sport route is there is something for everyone—bike tourists, hammer heads, kayakers, runners and a mix of all. BRaB now has a total of six wineries on and just nearby the route. Paper Moon Winery is a delightful new winery that opened its doors a couple weeks ago. The best way to reach Paper Moon from BRaB is to take Darrow Rd. west, off the main BRaB route. When you reach SR 60, turn right. Remember that SR 60 is a state route and can be busy, even on this small stretch. Vermilion Valley Vineyards is a soon-to-be-open winery that is located on Gore Orphanage Rd. in the Henrietta Township area of the Route, just south of SR 113. Click here to follow their progress toward opening.

These two wineries are an addition to four great wineries already on the Back Roads and Beaches route. Just off the western portion of the route is Matus Winery on Gore Orphanage Rd., just south of SR 20. In the middle of the route, you'll find Single Tree Winery on Baumhart Rt., about a half mile south of Garfield. And in the eastern portion of the route, just off SR 6 in Avon Lake you'll find our Klingshirn and Christ Wineries. It's that time of year again. Spring! We're starting to see cyclists and kayakers out and about on our rivers and back roads. Now that the weather is more cooperative we want to give you some tools to plan your visit. First off, a few upcoming events around Back Roads and Beaches:

Kayaking:
Sunday, March 29 will be the annual Keel-haulers Vermilion River Race. Check out the website for information including rules, maps and start times. The Keel-haulers is an organization headquartered in Northeast Ohio with 400 families that share an interest in outdoors and all kinds of boating including whitewater, sea kayaking, canoeing, rafting and racing.

Run

Snow!

Multi sport enthusiasts who’ve been waiting for snow now have more than enough to enjoy a winter hike, snowshoeing, cross country skiing, ice skating, sledding etc. And more appears to be on the way! Findley State Park, Lorain County Metro Parks, Cascade Park and our many other parks offer miles of trails and other winter amenities.

But don’t stop at traditional winter sports, be creative and try some real adventure! Bottom line is, getting out in the snow along BRaB is a blast! And when you’re done, explore one of our great galleries or museums, and warm up in one of four wineries along the route. Make it a weekend and stay at one of several local lodging facilities that welcome our multi sport visitors.

This weekend, Jan 17–18, 2009, the Lorain County Metro Parks will be hosting their annual Winter Days Festival at the Vermilion River Reservation. The festival will run Sat. from 10am–4pm and Sun. from 11am–4pm. Ice carving competitions will be the highlight on Saturday and demonstrations from professional ice carvers will take place Sunday. And don’t forget about the awesome sledding hill there!
